What's a Blog?
"Blog" is a term derived from the words Web Log, which is literally a website that forms a log of something. Intially blog were about people's personal lives and experiences, enhancing how they kept in touch with friends and family. The topic scope exploded and now you can find blogs on just about every subject. Blogs form a collection of chronologically-sorted articles known as posts. They utilise web technology by including pictures and links to other sites and blogs. At the time of writing (early 2007) there is a buzz around people making large amounts of money by 'blogging'. Why we have a Blog
Our blog isn't going to make us lots of money alone. Our blog, like most blogs, has a purpose other than making money. Ours in particular are two: - To provide a simple way to provide information on specific topics to our clients and potential clients. For example, if a client asks us a question about file types, we can answer their question and then direct them to our blog entry on file types. There they can find more detailed information, pictures and links to sources of more information. This helps us and helps our clients. The information is also publicly available, so it helps anyone who finds it.
- To demonstrate our knowledge to both existing and potential clients. A blog is usually made up of information that has some value. Once indexed by search engines, this information is easily found. This brings visitors to our website, which is good for business. Not many of them will be looking for a website or a graphic design but that's ok. Some of them will, and we're happy to help the rest too.
Do you have a Blog? These days everybody has a blog. In fact the two biggest creators of blogs are at opposite extremes. They are school students and large corporate organisations. It makes sense, if you think about time availability and what they have to gain. There are many reasons why you might want a blog. Almost all of them fall into one or more of three super-reasons: make money, attract website traffic, share information. There are also many different ways to get a blog for yourself. Just type "free blog" into your favourite search engine and you'll find the free solutions on offer. If you or your organisation has a website, then a blog is easily added. If you're one of our clients and you don't have a blog, let's have a conversation about what a blog can do for you and what's involved.
